Replacement window types and materials
Two choices drive most quotes: the frame material and the operating style.
Frame materials
| Vinyl | Fiberglass | Wood | Aluminum-clad wood | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Lowest | Mid–high | High | High |
| Maintenance | Very low | Low; paintable | Paint/seal regularly | Low outside, wood inside |
| Strengths | Value, good insulation | Strong, stable in heat and cold, slim frames | Traditional look, repairable | Wood look inside, durable outside |
| Watch for | Bulkier frames, limited dark colors on cheap lines | Fewer installers/brands | Rot if neglected | Price |
Styles
- Double-hung: the most common in Kentucky homes; both sashes move and usually tilt in to clean.
- Casement: cranks open, seals tightly, good over sinks.
- Slider: simple and affordable for wide openings.
- Picture: fixed, most efficient, no ventilation.
- Bay / bow: projects outward; more structure and cost.
Glass
Low-E double-pane is the standard choice. Compare the NFRC label: lower U-factor means better insulation; SHGC controls summer heat gain. ENERGY STAR sets criteria by climate zone; Kentucky falls in its North-Central zone.
Bedroom egress
Bedroom windows are emergency escape openings under the residential code, with minimum opening sizes. If you switch styles (e.g. double-hung to slider), make sure the new window still meets egress.
